Engine and Radiator.
The MEV Rocket has options of using most Zetec engines from the focus. The demonstrator made by MEV has a 1.6lt engine fitted
For my build I decided that I wanted the biggest engine I could get. Unfortunately I could not source a 2ltr donor so I went with a 1.8ltr.
The engine from the donor was fitted with aircon and power steering pumps however for the kit these are not required so need to be removed.
these can be seen as the 2 pulleys to the right of the picture.
This leaves a slight problem
the belt has to be shortened and a pulley need to be placed in the power steering position to allow the belt to run correctly.
it would be very simple if the power steering pump could be left on however this would be run dry and probably wouldn't
last very long before it seized.
My only option was to either find a ford part that would do the job or make one myself.
After spending a full day driving around every local scrap yard and visiting the local Ford Dealer I found out that no part was available to do the task.
so I had to make my own part.
actually making the new pulley wasn't hard but finding out how to do it took a good few hours. Here is how ive done it.
I found an adjustable pulley from another ford although I have no idea what it was off as it was an off the shelf part.
The problem with this was that the pulley was different to the pulley off the Donor as it was slightly smaller.
so I also had to buy a Focus belt tensioner.
I took the pulley off the adjustable tensioner and replaced it with the focus pulley, fortunately the bearing were the same size.
Then I fabricated a bracket to mount the adjustable tensioner to the mounting holes of the Power steering pump
I now have to buy a new belt that will fit the engine, although because I have used an adjustable tensioner I have do not have to be
millimetre perfect for it to fit.
Fabricating the part took approximately 2 hours.
Got the adjuster pulley fitted and just measured the length for the new belt and bought it off the shelf
the adjustable pulley can be seen at the fat right of the engine
