Gear Linkage
this was a job I wasn't looking forward to.
The focus donor uses a cable gear change, however when you decide to put
the engine in the back of the car instead of the front. this messes up the operation of the linkage
i.e.. first gear would be where reverse was, second gear where 5th was etc.
to fix this problem MEV had a cunning plan of using a Gear Stick off a Ford Mondeo
and fitting the cables from the rear. apparently this solves the problem,
although I have no idea how I am just a believer.
Two cable brackets were supplied by MEV to attach to the new gear Stick assembly
and the old ones were cut off.
I dry fit these and connected the cables to ensure I got the correct fittings for each cable.
It took about 3 hours of trail and error with huge problems with engaging reverse gear.
all the other gears worked fine but when I tried to move the stick from 5th to reverse
it would just not engage.
I eventually realised that there is a mechanism on the gearbox that stops The reverse gear
being engaged straight from 5th. So when I tried engaging reverse when the gearbox was in neutral
is slipped in easily.
the only problem was that because the cables were coming in from the rear instead of the front
one of the cables was twisted and kept popping off its joint.
To fix this I had to dismantle the gar stick assembly and grind off the joint spin it through
180 degrees and weld it back on this worked a treat.
here's what I did.
the original setup with the cable connector facing right
Dismantled assemble ground off spun through 180 degrees and ready to weld
welded up and put back together which stops the twist in the cable
