Petrol Tank.
Unfortunately as I am using the !.8ltr engine the exhaust manifold is on the opposite side to the 1.6ltr version.
This caused a slight problem with the catalytic converter encroaching on the area behind the seats where the
standard petrol tank supplied by MEV was fitted. The Tank would just not fit.
After contacting Stuart From MEV he resolved the situation by Fabricating me a new aluminium tank
that fit behind the passenger seat alone. this will free up some space behind the drivers seat for possible storage space.
The only Downside is that I have a fuel capacity of about 1.5 gallon less than the standard tank.
I also have to modify a Ford Mondeo Fuel pump and sender unit to fit the new tank.
Fortunately an article was published on how to do this in the June issue of Complete Kit Car Magazine.
So that's exactly what I did. It needs to be lengthened so it will reach the bottom of the tank.
As the Dashboard I have bought does not have a fuel gauge built into it and
because the tank is not square if I used a normal gauge the reading would be false
i.e.. the tank would be half full when the petrol was only about 1/3rd up the tank reading 1/3rd on the gauge.
So I decided to try out a little bit of electronics in a quiet time of my build. (Actually I was on night shift)
After a search on the web I found a site that had already covered this topic.

so I decided to make it.
I downloaded a copy of the following plans

got a parts list from Maplins courtesy of Elliot

and set about making the little beastie.
Basically it consists of 4 LED's that are controlled by a pic chip (the black thing)
and a variable resistor (the Blue Things) it allows the LED's to be adjusted for any fuel level in the tank.
Here is a picture of one LED circuit
Then all four completed
Here is a picture of the new adjustable gauge connected up to the modified sender with all four lights illuminated
with the float valve at almost maximum.
When I finally come to calibrate it. I will put one gallon an the tank and turn the variable resistor
until the first red LED lights then I will fill to 1/4 and adjust the Resistor until the Orange LED lights, and so on.
Back to the tank.
I had to drill holes and file it so I could get the filler and the modified petrol pump and sender to fit.
